Overview:
The Online Advertising industry is in a continuous state of change and innovation. Microsoft is a leader in this innovation and needed a site redesign to showcase their new creative tools, resources, and ad products. We set out to build a design system that made the ad creation process simple & easy, while also flexible enough to bend with future needs & placements.
MSA offers a ton options and decisions. Additionally their customers cover the spectrum of businesses, from small local shop owners, to large advertising agencies, and all of the potential deviations in-between. To combat this, we over-indexed on clarity and usefulness. In this step-by-step guide example below, users can access and interact with each step, build sample ads, adjust budgets, set target locations, and even see their ads in real-life mockup placements.
Our biggest challenge visually was how to clearly representing our product. How do we make banner ads visually appealing? No small feat. We chose to focus on images that showcased both a ‘product’ and the ‘business owner.’ Then through animation and scroll triggers, we would wrap the ‘product’ in an ad frame and build the banner around the moment.
Complex products inherently need a lot of information to explain and guide users. We developed a design system that can deliver a wide range of content with clean and accessible UI. In the example below, one singular base card 'template' design can be extended to deliver a wide range of information.
We learned that each audience had a threshold of information that they needed and anything more resulted in a negative experience. So throughout the journey we provide opportunities for deeper learning. Also below is a page example of just one of their product offerings, the Multimedia Ad Unit. Users can take a deep dive into the ad placement, learn about the costs, reach, and business implications.
